Cowgirls and Bowling Pins - 6:50 p.m. - Mary St., San Francisco. The Chorus Girls and Dancing Bowling Pins were lingering in an alleyway near the Chronicle studio. Their brightly colored outfits stood out against the subtle background tones. I liked how the different angles of the hat and boots were captured. Camera settings: Canon 5D MkII, ISO 200, 1/1000, f6.3, 21 mm.

Stars - 4:00 p.m. - Oakland. The old fashioned Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland has recently been painted, but the details like stained glass in the lobby and nifty patterns on the ceiling make it a unique place to see a film. Camera settings: Canon 5D MkII, ISO 400, 1/250, f11, 35 mm.
A Basket - 3:31 p.m. - San Francisco. Light doesn't get much better than this, a pick-up basketball game in the middle of the Panhandle near Golden Gate Park as the teams go at it. Camera settings: Canon 5D MkII, ISO 200, 1/500, f4, 200 mm.
Once In A Lifetime - 10:19 a.m. - Berkeley, Calif. I had the chance to witness a Corpse Flower in full bloom the other day at the UC Berkeley Botanical Gardens. It only happens once in the plants lifetime then it withers away forever. This one, which incidentally smelled only mildly better that the outhouse at our local playground, took 15 years to bloom then less than 24 hours to wither. It was a day to remember. By photographing the family posing in front of the flower I felt like I too was...
Summer Evening at Pier 41 - 6:21 p.m. - Fisherman's Wharf. This was my first time walking to the end of Pier 41 while waiting for an assignment. I noticed different people using the three tiered sitting area -- a couple talking, a barefoot woman looking out toward Alcatraz, and a woman on the top tier circling while taking several pictures. Camera settings: Canon 5D MkII, ISO 125, 1/500, f8, 30 mm.
East Beach - 4 p.m. - San Francisco. East Beach is becoming my favorite place to hang at the end of a shift. Dogs, wind, coffee and a quick way to get on the Golden Gate Bridge. Don't tell my editors. Camera settings: Canon 5D MkII, ISO 250, 1/500, f11, 200 mm.
Muttons - 10:59 a.m. - Pleasanton. The way I remember the saying is, "the black sheep of the family," not red. I was waiting for the Mutton Bustin' competition to begin at the Alameda County Fair, where young kids ride sheep and see how long they can hold on. Also waiting were the stars of the show, a group of sheep under a red overhang with sunlight streaking through, casting a red glow onto the farm animals. Camera settings: Canon 5D MkII, ISO 200, 1/250, f2.8, 20 mm.
Window Art - 10:22 a.m. - Valencia Street, San Francisco. Valencia Street is a place where art meets reality. Boarded-up walls are filled with murals and drawings that seem so common in the mission that they almost blend in without notice. This is where I came across a piece of street art that had been put behind glass and given a title. Suddenly everyone notices. Camera settings: Canon 5D MkII, ISO 100, 1/200, f2.8, 24 mm.
